Light Space: Textile Illumination Symposium (2018)

With textiles as substrate, this symposium co-organised by CITA and Soft Matters on the 14th of September 2018 at the Royal Danish Academy, Copenhagen explores how new lighting technologies can become part of architectural design practice as a means of supporting more resilient ways of living.

The interplay between light and materials is fundamental to the way we understand and appreciate the built environment. Textile and architectural design practices share the common aim to find ways by which to understand and design the articulation of natural and artificial lighting so as to enhance the perception and quality of lived space.

In early 20th century, gas and electricity introduced artificial lighting as a new material for architecture. Today a new generation of  digital and light-emitting technologies from OLED to glowing bacteria and 4D printing are presenting new technological platforms for lighting design.

With textiles as substrate, this symposium explores how these new lighting technologies can become part of architectural design practice as a means of supporting more resilient ways of living. By questioning the material practices of this new generation of lighting, we ask how more integrative design practices can be fostered.

  • How can we develop new methods of integration so that these new technologies can become part of the spatial design and not add-on layers?
  • How can we craft these technologies in more sustainable ways that allow for biodegradable and renewable designs?
  • How can they expand or renew the way lighting is used for more resilient practices of inhabitation ?

By inviting a broad interdisciplinary array of speakers from architecture, textiles and lighting design, this seminar aims to facilitate new interdisciplinary dialogues needed to facilitate such new practices.
